Blog Writing for Readability

For years now Hubby has been trying to convince me that my writing style is a little...convoluted. Complex. Confusing.

Since writing isn't really his "thang", I've always disagreed with him and insisted that writing well takes time and lots of words and stuff. You know. Adjectives and adverbs and prepositional phrases and clauses and such. And he always argues, "Less is more." He keeps telling me I use ten words when I could use five.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a blog image with a box like this one in the sidebar and it made me curious. So of course I clicked on the link and was directed to a page titled "The Blog Readability Test". It asks the question, "What level of education is required to understand your blog?" and offers a tempting box in which to enter your blog's URL and then your rating will magically appear.

Well this is interesting, I thought. I'd read that most successful journalists and writers write at an elementary school level so that they can be easily understood by more people. (Except for the Wall Street Journal's reporters; they try to confuse you as much as possible.)

So I typed in my blog's URL and got a nasty surprise. I tried it again to be sure. Same result. Drat!

image Then I tried the test on some of my favorite blogs to see how they were rated. Pioneer Woman tested at the desirable elementary school level. So did Antique Mommy and Chickens in the Road. Guess they're doing something right.

If you're curious like me and wondered how these tests work, you might want to look at this website. It gives a breakdown of how readability scores are tabulated (they were originally designed to sort out books for reading levels in schools). Pioneer Woman's readability chart looks something like this:

Summary Value
Total Sentences 2
Total Words 17
Average words per Sentence 8.50
Words with 1 Syllable 13
Words with 2 Syllables 3
Words with 3 Syllables 1
Words with 4 or more Syllables 0
Percentage of words with 3 or more Syllables 5.88%
Average Syllables per Word 1.29
Gunning Fog Index 5.75
Flesch Reading Ease 88.73
Flesch-Kincaid Grade 3.00

Which translates to the fact that you only need three years of schooling in order to understand Pioneer Woman's blog. She'll be so thrilled.

The bottom line is that for maximum readability, your blog's content should have shorter sentences made up of short words. Wait! Let's rewrite that sentence. "To be clear and simple, write short sentences with short words." That's better!

So, my friends, in future I'll try to be more concise. Not that you're not the smartest blog readers in the world, because you are. But because Hubby says so.

Hugs,

Pam siggie 2

P.S. If the test has trouble reading your blog, be sure to put the "www." at the front of your blog's URL in the search box.

Pam,This is a most interesting post! Thank you for sharing this BUT...lol...I think I perhaps had better expand my Vocabulary extensively in contemplation of exploring the site! I am almost AFRAID to,but I will as it looks so fun! Although I feel that perhaps I should be given an exclusive pardon to possibility of criticism that I may feel considering my name is Jane. And without Jane, and the Dick and Jane world from which I came those college educated analytical web owners would not be even reading without me! LOL...that was fun to share,oh and tell Hubby that if Jane, perhaps the original Jane from Dick and Jane gives your blog 100 percent approval what MORE could you want? Go Pam Go. See Jane run!

  • Tammy

    ok Pam,
I took the test for all three of my blogs. LOL, I come at High School level for The Olde Hollow Crow, Junior High Leve for Easy Livin' and Genius level for my business directory. Imagine that.???

  • Black Sheep Lisa

How interesting! I am high school level.

  • CozyCoops Corner

I did the test on my blog ~ Elementary Level. Great post Pam ~ that was fun !

  • Pam at Antique or Not

Oh, Lady Jane, stop! I'm snorting, you're making me laugh so hard! And snorting is so very unladylike! LOL

It's fun to see what everyone else's blog readability levels are...maybe one day I'll graduate to elementary school level...

  • terri

I'm so gonna take that blog test!

You know, Stephen King agrees with your hubby. He wrote a great book called "On Writing." If you haven't read it, it's very worthwhile. It's just his take on how to write well, enjoy it, and ignore lots of the so-called "expert" advice on writing.

  • terri

I got the Elementary rating. I wouldn't have considered that a good thing until I read your post. Thanks!

  • Shari

This was fun! I checked my blog and it was high school level! Guess I'll have to work a little harder to get it down there. LOL!

    Hugs,
    Shari

  • Pam at Antique or Not

Thanks, Terri! Got it, read it, it's in the drawer next to my "reading" chair. Maybe I should read it again, eh? LOL

  • Olde Dame Penniwig

Dearies, mine was "Genius Level" but we all knew that, didn't we? Ye have to be a genius to figure out what the heck the Olde Dame is trying to say.

Isn't Jane too funny? Definitely not a Plain Jane!

  • Shari

I took the test for my blog and it was at the high school level. LOL!! I'll have to work harder to get it down to the lower level.....

    Hugs,
    Shari

I did this test several months ago, I am elementary my dear Pam!! Confident and completely sure I was going to rate at least a freshman college level, my ole ego took a hit that day. I've since got over it and decided I too love elementary blogging. It suits me!! I've also decided in my older age (you know I turn 40 in just over 2 weeks) that I really am starting to dislike men. AND, much to my hubby's disbelief, they really don't know EVERYTHING or are RIGHT about EVERYTHING. (Funny I had a conversation with him this morning, I was wrong about everything I said. hmmm) And I too have a lot of run on sentences and use LOTS of words!! heeheehee take care Pam, great post!!

  • Linda

Well it can't test my blog - I must be UNREADABLE! LOL
It's a good thing blogging comes from what is in my heart and not my desire to prove I have graduated college and taken post graduate courses! LOL

  • simple~needs

i added it to my blog. thanks!!

  • Tammy

TJ here de-lurking and coming out of the blog closet...LOL!

I've set up a new blog, which I hope you come to visit when you can.

I've only one post up but could not resist the test...it tested college postgrad and my book blog tested genius with only two posts!

Let me get going good in either then retest...it might not be so pretty then...lol!

    I enjoy reading here regardless!♥

  • Sharon

I'm so glad you shared this. My blog tested at a Junior High School level. Now I'll start trying to lower that to become more readable.

I'll add this to my blog tomorrow.
    Have a blessed day!
    Sharon

  • Belle (from Life of a...)

    I'm scared to know!

  • prairierunner

I'd be afraid I'd score so low they wouldn't have a category ;)

  • Shellmo

Mine tested at college - post grad. That's bad - right??!

  • Pam at Antique or Not

Shelley, you and I are "bad" together! LOL

I think we both write just fine. But Hubby probably has a point; I'll try to make my writing more simple in future. But it's so hard! I write like I think; you almost have to retrain your thinking before you can change your writing style.

And I'm definitely re-reading Stephen King's "On Writing". Thanks for the suggestion, Terri!

  • tam

HHHMMM Interesting! I took four and a half years creative writing for gifted students in Jr high and high school. I like to break the rules of writing! LoL! Big surprise huh? So I probably wouldn't rate very well I am afraid.
But what a fun idea-never heard of that site before. I think you do just fine with your blog-tell hubby I said that! :D Tam

  • Homespun Cottage

Pam, what fun!! I tested grad school on one and genius on the other....I know that is not good in blog land..but hey the closest I have ever been to a degree in my life!! thanks for sharing!! I will try to do better..short and sweet huh??
    Dana

  • AnnaSam

    Thanks Pam.
I am off to see what mine is! But part of me is not sure if I want too. LOL have a blessed day!
    Juanita

  • tidymom

This is bizarre - why did mine test Genius??? LOL that's a first for me!

    Fun post Pam

  • Megan (FriedOkra)

Hee hee. I've been posting writing tips on my blog for 2 weeks and they say exactly the opposite! Whooopsie! Oh well, there can only be one Pioneer Woman, anyway, right?

  • Julia @ Hooked on Houses

How interesting! I hadn't heard of that site before, so of course I had to go check it out. I had fun plugging in all the blog addresses I could think of. Most seemed to come out "Elementary Level," including mine. Since I have a college degree in writing, I was a little disappointed in myself that my prose is THAT basic. Ha.

  • vintagewindow

This was very interesting. I was bragging to my better half about being High School level. I was soon shattered to find out he ranked Genius. burst my bubble fast.
